Nakabuya Jovia’s Story
Jovia - Grade 5 at Buiga Sunrise School
Jovia - final year midwifery student
Hello, my name is Nakabuya Jovia. I am a graduate from Buiga Sunrise School and am doing my last year in medical school as an Enrolled Midwife.
I joined Buiga Sunrise preschool in 2007 when I was just 2 years old. Later, in primary school, my mom couldn't afford to support me to continue with my studies - this was really a hard time for me because I wanted to become a great nurse so I could help save people's lives and change my family’s status.
Luckily, I was given a bursary at Sunrise and I was able to finish my primary school. After graduating I still received support and I went to one of the best secondary schools in my home district, where I passed all the science subjects highly. I was approved to join a medical school, but they are really expensive schools and I really didn't know how to get there. I was stuck again, but through Sunrise, I was connected to a family from Canada, who pledged to pay for my tuition in a medical school.
Growing up as a girl, I made so many visits to hospital and found out that women and children were the most vulnerable people. I believed I could do something to help improve women's and children's lives! When I joined medical school, I chose to study midwifery and decided this was the best path for me to get to my dream, as it keeps me in contact with both children and women.
And now, I am proud of the great midwife I am becoming,. I am finding joy in bringing life to the world and I have a big dream of joining Gentle Hearts Maternity Centre next year when I graduate. I cant wait to serve my community, my people, save lives and encourage more young people to find their dreams!
Thank you Sunrise for grooming and getting me where I am now.
